The MoVVV has already created new streams of income by a new waste management paradigm. It has already produced VITA – GREEN and VITA – GREEN plus, a biocatalytic peat alternative soil substrate, after the separate collection and selection of Greens and Organic / Biodegradable Waste. The Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens collaborates scientifically with the Municipality of Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni for the collection and cutting green and biodegradable wastes to 0,5–3 cm pieces, mixing with the biocatalyst and other nutritional and supportive substances in order to produce biocatalytic peat alternative soil substrate. 400 citizens have of the Municipality already use VITA-GREEN.

The MoVVV is Lead Partner of the project STIMULATING CITIZENS PARTICIPATION TO RECYCLE PROCESSES THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BENEFITS SYSTEMS from December 2017 to November 2019 (Co-Financed by INTERREG V-B BALKAN MEDITERRANEAN 2014-2020). More info: https://benefit-as-you-save.eu/

Action plans have developed in a pilot area (PIGADAKIA – VOULA) based on a common methodology, defining the process of separate selection and collection, the way of citizens participation, the type of benefits and the way these will be returned to citizens.

A 20% increase of recycle percentage and enhancement of environmental awareness are expected based on “Benefit As You Save” (BAS). Local society and economy in MoVVV area will benefit, since the increase of recycling rates will decrease local expenses for solid waste management. In addition, a slight improvement of income is possible for citizens that actively participate in the programme.
