The Hellenic Ministry of the Environment and Energy (MEEN) works to achieve the protection of the natural environment and resources, the improvement of quality of life, climate change mitigation and adaptation and national urban revival and planning, in line with the principles of sustainable development. MEEN, in pursuit of the aforementioned goals, operates as the national competent authority for the development, monitoring and implementation of environmental policies in Greece.

One of the main priorities of MEEN is to adopt and support policies and actions towards rational and effective waste management, obtaining an efficient use of resources as well as advanced protection of the environment and public health.

As the main competent authority for waste management at a national level, the MEEN is responsible for the development and implementation of the National Waste Management Plan (NWMP) and the Waste Prevention Plan (WPP) according to the 4042/2012 (A’24) Legal Act.

With regard to Circular Economy, MEEN has prepared the National Strategy for Circular Economy and the relevant Operation Plan. The Ministry also chairs the Interministerial Committee and the National Advisory Board of Production and Social Entities and Bodies for Circular Economy, which will be the permanent bodies to contribute in the formation of the National Circular Economy policies.

MEEN is the coordinating beneficiary of LIFE-IP CEI-Greece “Implementation of Circular Economy in Greece” participating in most of the project’s Actions. The project works as an important tool for the Ministry towards the implementation of the National Waste Management Plan, the National Waste Prevention Plan and the National Strategy for Circular Economy.
