The innovative separate waste collection program for Hazardous Household Waste (HHW) continues with the addition of another bin at the corner of Aianis and G. Gennimata Street, opposite the stadium, as part of the collaboration between DIADYMA and the Municipality of Kozani.

The current collection points in the city of Kozani, where citizens can recycle packaging containers containing HHW, are as follows:

  • Corner of Kakridi and Sikelianou Streets (Platania)
  • Corner of Ailiostratas and Dadamogia Streets (opposite the 6th Junior High School)
  • Stefanou Stamkidi Street (Agia Paraskevi open market)
  • Corner of Aianis and G. Gennimata Streets (opposite the stadium)

On Wednesday, March 5th, 2025 at 12:30, an awareness event was held for students and teachers of the 8th Primary School of Kozani at the location of the new bin. The event was attended by the Head of Waste Management Systems Operation, Dimitrios Karathanos.

Students and teachers from the 8th Primary School of Kozani actively participated by bringing HHW-containing packaging, while being informed and sensitized about the importance of proper waste management.

Hazardous Household Waste (HHW) consists of small quantities of waste generated in households that typically end up in regular (green) mixed waste bins, significantly hindering further processing and reducing the value of the recovered materials.

Household-origin waste that falls under the HHW category includes:
i) items with chemical substances, such as personal care products (acetone, nail polish), detergents (for clothes, dishes, etc.), drain cleaners, paints, glues, varnishes, insecticides/pesticides, aerosols/sprays, ii) expired medicines, iii) infectious waste (needles, gauze, catheters, etc.), iv) mercury thermometers, v) batteries,
vi) printer ink and toner cartridges, vii) lamps and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

In these special bins, only packaging with contents from the first category (i) of HHW should be recycled. Empty containers (without contents) should be placed in the standard recycling bins provided by municipalities, according to the material type (plastic, metal, glass, paper).

It is clarified that: for household batteries, lamps, small electrical & electronic devices, and expired medicines—separate waste collection programs are already in place. Citizens should look for special bins in stores, public services, and DIADYMA facilities (more information at diadyma.gr or DIADYMA’s social media).
