The European project LIFE-IP CEI-Greece, “Implementation of the Circular Economy in Greece”, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, has signed a new voluntary cooperation agreement with the Karditsa Energy Community (ESEK) under Action C5, which promotes the sustainable management and use of agri-food waste.
The new alliance strengthens the LIFE-IP CEI-Greece network of voluntary alliances through the participation of the Karditsa Energy Community (ESEK), a pioneering example of community bioenergy in Greece that transforms local residual biomass into an energy resource and an opportunity for development. By combining a cooperative structure, production facilities and expertise, ESEK puts the circular economy into practice, with a focus on local community participation and benefits.
Since 2017, ESEK has operated a facility in Karditsa that processes residual biomass and produces solid biofuels in pellet form, using forestry and agricultural residues, as well as pruning waste from urban green spaces. Its distinctive feature is that it links the use of these resources to a participatory model of local development, in which citizens, businesses and local authorities work together to give new value to materials that often remain unused, supporting renewable heating and the local economy.
Cooperation with the LIFE-IP CEI-Greece project provides an opportunity to explore both the requirements and the challenges involved in using these materials at the local level through the exchange of knowledge and experience. ESEK’s experience can help identify practical solutions and improve understanding of the technical and organisational factors that influence their implementation.
The new agreement expands the local and regional alliances being developed under Action C5 of LIFE-IP CEI-Greece, bringing together organizations with relevant expertise to explore circular economy solutions in the agri-food sector.
