Voluntary Memorandum of Collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and the Municipality of Metsovo in the Context of the Circular Economy
As part of a broader effort to promote the circular economy in the agricultural sector, the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEEN) and the Municipality of Metsovo have signed a Voluntary Memorandum of Collaboration to advance the sustainable management and utilization of agro-food waste.
This agreement falls under the European project LIFE-IP CEI Greece – Implementation of the Circular Economy in Greece, which fosters voluntary partnerships for sustainable waste management and the dissemination of best practices at local and regional levels.
Through this alliance, the LIFE-IP CEI Greece team will inform local stakeholders to share best practices on the prevention and valorization of organic agricultural waste. Activities will include the organization of workshops for knowledge exchange and data collection, as well as the provision of technical assistance and information on available funding opportunities and investment tools. Additionally, a customized Agrofood Waste Management Plan will be developed to reflect the specific needs and characteristics of the Metsovo area and serve a foundation for future actions.
The Municipality of Metsovo, along with local partners, will actively contribute by participating in meetings and planned activities, providing essential data on the types, volumes, and seasonality of generated agricultural waste, and supporting efforts to raise awareness and encourage engagement within the local community and among relevant stakeholders.
Participation in the circular economy alliance represents an important step toward the rational sustainable management of agricultural resources and the strengthening of environmental stewardship in the area.
Metsovo, a mountainous rural area with intensive farming and livestock activities, generates substantial quantities of organic waste, including crop residues, manure, and animal by-products. The implementation of an integrated management plan for these materials is essential—not only to reduce environmental pollution but also to unlock their potential as valuable resources in a circular economy model.
