The event showcasing the results of the “Antiparos Circular Business” initiative was successfully held on Tuesday, September 23. The initiative is implemented by the Municipality of Antiparos in collaboration with the DAFNI Network of Sustainable Islands, within the framework of the European project LIFE-IP CEI-Greece “Circular Economy Implementation in Greece”.
At the opening of the event, greetings were addressed by the Mayor of Antiparos, Mr. Anastasios Faroupas, the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Artemios Triantafyllos, and the Managing Director of DAFNI, Mr. Kostas Komninos. This was followed by the presentation of the quantitative results from two years of operation of the “door-to-door” collection of recyclable materials from Antiparos’ restaurants and catering businesses, along with a discussion on future prospects for further strengthening the Circular Economy on the island.
Residents and business representatives attended the event with great interest and participated in the open discussion, reaffirming their active support for initiatives promoting a sustainable future for Antiparos. The warm response and positive feedback from attendees highlighted the broad acceptance of the initiative within the local community.
Impressive results of two years
The “Antiparos Circular Business” initiative started as a pilot in October 2023 and, since May 2024, has been fully implemented across restaurants, food retail stores, the Primary School, and the Junior & Senior High School of Antiparos.
To date, the following have been collected and sent to recycling centers:
- 4 tons of cardboard packaging
- 2 tons of plastic bottles
- 2 tons of glass bottles
- 400 kilos of aluminum cans
The significant reduction of waste ending up in the landfill and the high purity of the recyclable materials prove the effectiveness of the initiative. Its success is attributed to the active participation of residents and businesses, who embraced the program from the very beginning and consistently applied Source Separation practices.
The Municipality of Antiparos warmly thanks all participants, the employees ensuring the smooth operation of the program, the external partner undertaking the demanding daily task of collection, and the DAFNI team for its continuous support.
The Municipality is committed to continuing efforts to upgrade waste management, by strengthening infrastructure, gradually expanding the Source Separation network, and launching a pilot action for the collection of biowaste from food-service businesses.
