The integrated project LIFE-IP CEI-Greece, of 8 years duration, has recently entered dynamically it’s 2nd phase, with significant achievenments  during the 1st preparatory stage, including a large number of completed deliverables that were prepared under the difficult circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following the succesful completion of the 1st phase of LIFE-IP CEI-Greece, the project team submitted recently to the European Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and the Environment  (CINEA) the 1st Interim Report, including all the completed deliverables as well as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The 1st Interim Report comprises of a detailed description of the project results so far, including learning achievements for all project partners, through the implementation of preparatory actions.

At the end of November 2021 the 3rd Monitoring visit of LIFE-IP CEI-Greece was succesfully completed on line with the participation of CINEA Project Adviser, Mr. Aurelio Politano and the monitoring team members from NEEMO EEIG Ms Sophia Papageorgiou and Elias Demian (Technical Monitors) as well as Krystof Sembera (Financial Monitor). During the meeting a constructive dialogue evolved, between project partners and the monitoring team, highlighting the results so far and the project’s importance in supporting the national plans on waste management and circular economy implementation (National Waste Management Plan, National Plan for Waste Management Prevention, National Strategy on Circular Economy).

The project LIFE-IP CEI-Greece, according to the grant agreement and, having considered the latest developments and dynamics (i.e. national legal framework) proceeded with some essential changes and/or enrichment of certain actions in order to support its broader targets. In particular:

  • The inclusion of a new associated beneficiary for the implementation of demonstration actions on excess food and food waste prevention (the Central Market of Thessaloniki S.A.)
  • The compilation of a special programme on food waste prevention and the improvement of data – the relevant knowledge base – on waste treatment, in the context of action A1.1.
  • The production of Booklets (Guides) with specific guidelines for municipalities and the general public, regarding the seperate collection of household hazardous waste, the PAYT system and the operation of Green Centres, in order to support the practices of Reuse, Separate Collection and Recycling, in the context of action A3.2.
  • The finalization of the sites for the 3 Enhanced Green Centres of the project, with one being in the Municipality of Thessaloniki and two in Attica (Municipality of Athens and Municipality of Vari, Voula, Vouliagmeni).

The begining of Phase II

A number of important concrete implementation actions (C) as well as monitoring the impact of the project actions (D), start in the 2nd phase of the project, such as: the construction and operation of 3 Enhanced Green Centres (EGCs), the development and operation of 5 integrated waste management systems, implementing the principle of waste hierarchy as well as the new legal framework for waste in isolated pilot areas (C2), the full scale implementation of a collection network and a management system for household hazardous waste in the Region of Western Macedonia and the Municipality of Athens (C3), the development of a platform in order to monitor and manage the prevention of food waste (C4.2), demonstration actions for food excess and food waste prevention (C4.3), the development of local/regional alliances for waste management in the agrofood sector (C5), the implementation of economic instruments towards the support of CE (C6), capacity building actions with special seminars, food waste prevention forums and long distance training (C7), the monitoring of CE indicators at national level for basic sectors and value chains (D2) and monitoring the impact of pilot and demonstration actions (D3).
