The cooperation between DIADYMA S.A., the Pharmaceutical Associations of Grevena, Kastoria, Kozani, Florina, and the Cooperative of Pharmacists of the Pharmaceutical Associations of Western Macedonia was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum Agreement for the development of a pilot collection and proper management of infectious (sharps) domestic health care waste network. The agreement was signed on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 14:00, at the offices of DIADYMA.

The memorandum was co-signed by Mr. Panagiotis Plakentas, Mayor of Eordaia and Chairman of the Board of DIADYMA; Mr. Georgios Sartikidis, Chairman of the Board of the Grevena Pharmaceutical Association; Mr. Ioannis Savvopoulos, Chairman of the Board of the Kastoria Pharmaceutical Association; Ms. Maria-Theresia Charami, Chairwoman of the Kozani Pharmaceutical Association; and Mr. Athanasiou Minas, representative of the Florina Pharmaceutical Association. Also present at the meeting were the General Secretary of the Kozani Pharmaceutical Association, Ms. Maria Karakostanoglou; the General Director of DIADYMA, Mr. Dimosthenis Mavridis; and company executives.

The aim of this collaboration is the proper management of infectious sharps waste from domestic health care and involves the free distribution of special containers by pharmacies to citizens in the Region of Western Macedonia for the safe disposal of these waste such as needles, lancets etc.

In his statement, Mr. Panagiotis Plakentas, Chairman of DIADYMA’s Board, noted:
“DIADYMA continues to lead in waste management by taking initiatives that go beyond its conventional obligations, such as the collection of infectious sharp waste from domestic healthcare, ensuring their safe and effective management, contributing to the protection of public health and the environment”.   He also emphasized that the cooperation of all involved entities is crucial for the program’s success and continuation, as well as for raising awareness among the public and stakeholders.

Ms. Charami, Chairwoman of the Kozani Pharmaceutical Association, stated:
“Pharmaceutical associations are important social partners who will always actively participate in such initiatives,” and expressed the collective will to continue this actioneven after the conclusion of the pilot phase.

Finally, the presidents of the Kastoria and Grevena Pharmaceutical Associations, Mr. Savvopoulos and Mr. Sartikidis, as well as the representative from Florina, Mr. Athanasiou, also expressed their support. They highlighted that pharmacies will actively contribute to the management of special waste streams, just as they do with expired medicines, and will assist in the success of this new initiative.

This initiative is part of the European project LIFE-IP CEI-Greece – LIFE18 IPE/GR/000013 “Circular Economy Implementation in Greece.”
