On Friday, July 25, 2025, the official inauguration of the Waste Transfer Station (WTS) of the Municipality of Elafonisos took place successfully — an important infrastructure that strengthens sustainable waste management on the island.
As part of the event, the LIFE IP CEI GREECE project, coordinated by the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy, organized an informational workshop on the circular economy and the proper management of hazardous household waste (HHW).
HHW includes materials commonly found in our homes — such as cleaning products, sprays, nail polish, and more — which, if not disposed of properly, can pose risks to the environment and public health.
The workshop included:
- Presentation of the LIFE project’s actions on HHW
- Demonstration of the special collection bins and the characteristic vehicle “ep! on the go”
- Presentation of the materials collected
- Interactive YES/NO knowledge game for children
- Distribution of informational material
The activity was held in an air-conditioned space at the Elafonisos School, with the participation of students, where attendees had the opportunity to learn more about the circular economy solutions already being implemented on the island.
The event and inauguration were honored by the presence of Mr. Manolis Grafakos, Secretary General for Waste Management Coordination of the Ministry of Environment and Energy. Representing the LIFE project were Ms. Mary Plati, Project Manager, and Ms. Eugenia Karapatsiou, Environmental Scientist from DIADYMA S.A. Also in attendance were Mr. Theodoros Veroutis, Deputy Regional Governor of Laconia, and Mr. Giorgos Smyrniotis, President of the Peloponnese Solid Waste Management Agency (FODSA). The event was organized by the Municipality of Elafonisos, with the presence of the Mayor, Mr. Angelos Tsirigotakis.
Elafonisos is showing the way toward a more responsible and circular everyday life!
