The LIFE IP CEI GREECE project continues to actively strengthen local voluntary alliances aimed at promoting circular economy in the agri-food sector, this time by signing a volunteer bilateral agreement with ENA Development Consultants, based in Xanthi.

The agreement focuses on knowledge exchange and the provision of information to agricultural cooperatives, producers, and livestock stakeholders working with ENA regarding opportunities to valorize agri-food waste according to circular economy principles, transforming it from an environmental burden into a valuable resource for local communities.

Through the voluntary alliance of the LIFE IP CEI GREECE project, coordinated centrally by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, emphasis is placed on designing solutions tailored to the real needs of the wider Xanthi area. These solutions take into account the type and quantity of waste streams, seasonality, and the geographic characteristics of the region, while drawing on best practices from both Greek and international experience gained through the project.

The Xanthi region is considered one of the most dynamic agri-food hubs in Thrace, characterized by strong primary production and significant bio-waste flows. It features robust crop production, including cotton, cereals, and sunflower, developed livestock farming involving sheep, goats, and cattle, as well as local food processing units, all of which generate substantial quantities of residues with high valorization potential.

Through this voluntary alliance, the evaluation and implementation of awareness-raising actions, technical support, and the design of management solutions are expected to create the conditions for new economic activities, strengthen local employment, and substantially reduce the environmental footprint.

The voluntary alliance acts as a catalyst for transitioning from the linear “produce – consume – dispose” model toward a circular system that creates local value, promotes sustainable development, and enhances the resilience of rural areas.
